In September, it was announced Samuel Wong would not be reappointed Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra's music director when his contract expires in July, after a tumultuous and often controversial tenure during which he sacked 15 musicians and saw 19 others quit. But yesterday, we were told Wong (right) is staying on as principal conductor.
The development perhaps explains Wong's cryptic response to media inquiries two months ago about his future plans. By e-mail, Wong quoted this Buddhist proverb: 'When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.'
Now that his appearance is assured, SAR wonders if the orchestra is ready.
