The Last Reindeer

World, 8pm

This programme looks at the impact of hunting on Finland's wild forest reindeer. A century ago the animal had dis-appeared from the Finnish tundra, forced into neighbouring Russia by indiscriminate hunting.

Now, however, in an effort to save the species Finns are nurturing the wild herds and building hundreds of kilometres of fences to prevent interbreeding with domestic reindeer. This film follows the hunters through the winter freeze as they check for wounded animals and track wild herds across the frozen landscape.
