Queen Mary a white elephant

Long Beach, California (Dec 5): The Queen Mary, Long Beach's floating white elephant, is not earning its keep as a tourist attraction, and local residents do not want to pay the once proud ocean liner's bills.

One City Council member, irked by the ship's growing operating deficit - US$2 million (about HK$10 million) last year - said wishfully that someone should 'leave the keys in the ignition' in the hopes that a thief might take it.

Future shops

Hong Kong (Dec 6): Housewives will go shopping by television in the not-to-distant future. Changes in communications will allow them to tune into the 'supermarket channel' and order what they see on the screen.

The day of the space-age shopper was predicted by the Au Boon-haw professor of communication, Dr Wilbur Schram, yesterday.

Dr Schram said new technology would also enable people to call up particular news items on television screens, order entertainment programmes and have newspapers printed in their homes by facsimile.
