Guangdong will receive a new leadership team when the province's 10th people's congress convenes on January 13 in Guangzhou.

Former Guangzhou party secretary Huang Huahua will be appointed governor at the congress, replacing Lu Ruihua. Like Mr Lu, Mr Huang is a Guangdong native.

The starting date was approved on Friday by the Standing Committee of the Ninth Guangdong People's Congress. The committee also announced the appointment of a new provincial finance department head, with Liu Kun replacing Chen Jixing.

In October Mr Huang, also a provincial vice-party secretary, was appointed a Guangdong vice-governor, clearing the way for Mr Huang's promotion to governor next month.

Like Mr Lu before him, Mr Huang will work alongside a party secretary hailing from Liaoning province in the northeast. Last month, former Zhejiang party secretary Zhang Dejiang was transferred to Guangdong, replacing fellow Liaoning native Li Changchun. Mr Li was promoted to the Politburo Standing Committee at the 16th party congress.

A starting date for the Guangzhou People's Congress has yet to be announced, but it will likely be held in late January or February after the provincial congress has concluded. The municipal congress will elect a successor to outgoing mayor Lin Shusen, who succeeded Mr Huang as Guangzhou party secretary.
