The Pakistan Islamic Welfare Union has been struggling since the establishment of the SAR in 1997 for non-Chinese residents of Hong Kong to be given Chinese nationality.

The situation had previously been unclear as to whether non-Chinese residents were eligible to apply, but it is now clear that it is open to all residents regardless of race, colour or religion. The government has also stated that this will enhance Hong Kong's image as 'Asia's World City'.

On behalf of Hong Kong's Pakistani community, the union would like to thank the Chief Executive, the Secretary for Security and the Director of Immigration for implementing such an open policy which will hopefully ease racial discrimination.
