POPULATION TO BE BELOW 1.4 BILLION BY 2010

A controlled birth rate and stricter family planning services will keep the country's population below 1.4 billion by the end of 2010, the State Family Planning Commission says. The commission's report submitted yesterday at the Fifth Asia-Pacific Population Conference in Bangkok also said the nation's birth rate was being kept at 1.8 children per couple.
