BUSES HAVE QUIET ZONE

PUBLISHED : Saturday, 11 January, 2003, 12:00am
UPDATED : Saturday, 11 January, 2003, 12:00am

I refer to the letter by Catherine Ng headlined 'Ear-shattering experience on KMB bus' (South China Morning Post, December 20).

Noting that televisions on buses are welcomed by most, but disliked by some passengers, we have been working with the bus companies to provide a generally agreeable environment on buses.

As we have explained in previous letters to these columns on this matter, the bus companies are now reconfiguring the quiet zone to the back portion of the lower deck.

This means only one speaker providing the broadcasts will be turned on at the lower deck to reduce the nuisance to some individuals, while allowing other passengers to continue listening to the TV services.

We shall review the effectiveness of the new arrangement on the lower deck with bus operators and take into account passenger feedback. We will consider further improvement measures as is deemed appropriate.
