THE JEWELS OF ITALY gala dinner organised by the Italian Chamber of Commerce showcased some of the country's finest exports (unfortunately not including Sophia Loren): jewels, garments and cuisine.

The usual speeches and sermons done with, the catwalk stretched out as models - clothed by Joyce Boutique - strutted and showed off the latest Bulgari jewels: resplendent trinkets with price tags starting at $10,000 and going sky-high. After feasting their eyes on the dishes on the catwalk, guests sampled chefs Umberto Bombana and Paolo Monti's flawless menu. Keeping to the spirit of the evening, guests matched the finery on display as dazzling gowns and faultless penguin-suits hit the dance floor after the auction and the awards handed out to prominent Italian chefs.

During the evening, a mysterious guest was spotted sauntering by carrying a huge black Moschino bag with the words 'Italians do it better' emblazoned in bold, white letters. Point well made.
