Privacy at a price

Our image-conscious Financial Secretary, Antony Leung Kam-chung (below), is determined to show he is one of the people when his wife gives birth at the end of this month and - oh, baby - is it costing him.

Eschewing pricey-looking private clinics, he has booked Olympic missus Fu Mingxia into the proles' favourite, the government-run Queen Mary Hospital.

But rather than mix it in a public ward, he has taken the hospital's little-used private service. And while this ensures his wife will have privacy, it is not cheap. For instance, a caesarean section and a week's stay adds up to about $50,000.

This compares poorly with a number of similar packages offered by the highly competitive private sector. For example, Happy Valley's Hong Kong Sanatorium offers the same service for between $13,000 and $18,000.

As ever in Hong Kong, when it comes to getting the right look, clearly money is no object.
