STANDARD CHARTERED CHIEF BACKS TAX RISE

Standard Chartered Bank chief executive Peter Wong Tung-shun has backed the proposal to raise profits tax by 1 per cent. He said any measure to ease the budget deficit should be carried out as soon as possible. Last week, three major business groups agreed to a rise from 16 to 17 per cent, but some said it should be implemented in two stages.
