HONG KONG'S GAY FESTIVAL SHOULD BE FAMILY ORIENTED

I am glad that my proposal for a gay festival has so far received some very positive feedback.

However, there have also been some misconceptions and I would like to clarify a few points. A valid concern has been raised that given that there is no legislation against discrimination based on sexual orientation, a participant in such an event would run the risk of being sacked. Which is why I have been advocating that the event should be family oriented. One would not have to be 'out' to join in the event. And after all, lesbians and gays have families.

Some of my opinions have been misconstrued as being against flamboyant marchers commonly seen in gay parades around the world. But what I am really opposed to are the stereotypes. Freedom of expression is of paramount importance. Hong Kong should host a gay festival that has its own unique style.

I see the event as being a combined effort on the part of the lesbian and gay community, as well as supporters of sexual rights. The role of Horizons (a listed charity that provides counselling services in sexual orientation issues) would be to provide administrative support and ensure transparency in the financing of the festival.

On February 26, I met with Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Patrick Ho Chi-ping, and he indicated to me that I have his office's support. I commend the government for taking such an important step.
