KEY SOCCER AND TENNIS DATES CANCELLED

Two major events in Hong Kong's sporting year became the latest casualties of Sars yesterday. A Davis Cup tennis tie and an Olympic soccer qualifiying match in Hong Kong were cancelled as the World Health Organisation issued its travel advisory warning against inessential visits to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's Davis Cup match with Lebanon is off after the Lebanese governing body decided not to send their team. The Asia/Oceania Zone Group II second-round tie had been due to start tomorrow [Friday] at Victoria Park.

The first leg of Hong Kong's Athens 2004 Olympic qualifying football match against Sri Lanka, scheduled to be played at Mongkok Stadium on April 12, was also postponed by the Asian Football Confederation.

The qualifying match between Singapore and Taiwan, which was due to be played in Taiwan's Chungshan Stadium, has also been put back because of the atypical pneumonia scare.
