A SHORT CUT TO SCOTTISH MUSICAL HEAVEN

I'M EXTREMELY stingy when it comes to compilation albums but occasionally I'm willing to splash cash for some of them. 4766 Seconds: A Short Cut to Teenage Fanclub is one of the few I'd buy, as this can be seen as a learning opportunity.

The Scottish guitar-rock band, formed in the late 1980s, are one of the most important bands in Britain's fight against the US' Nirvana-led grunge invasion during 1990s. Instead of buying all their six albums, getting this compilation is a more economical way to get to know them.

Listening to 4766 Seconds makes me realise how much I have missed. The compilation, which contains 21 songs, collects the best songs from past acclaimed albums.

Debut single Everything Flows - from their debut album A Catholic Education (1990) - first brought the band to the limelight. The Concept and What You Do To Me from Bandwagonesque (1991) were the call-to-arms for British bands during the anti-US grunge period; Hang On and Radio from Thirteen (1993), Sparky's Dream from 1995's Grand Prix, Planet from Songs From Northern Britain and Dumb Dumb Dumb from Howdy! are still refreshing to listen to.
