NEC's WT600 gets up close and professional

Carolyn Ong

Projectors are not exactly exciting gadgets that we feature frequently in these pages but we believe NEC's WT600 deserves a mention for achieving a small technological breakthrough.

The WT600 displays images using aspheric mirrors instead of projection lenses like most projectors.

This means it needs a much shorter focal distance to project images. This is not possible with run-of-the-mill projectors. Using this method, the throwing distance between the projector and a 40-inch screen is just 6cm. This means that you can put the projector right in front of the screen, so someone giving a presentation can move about freely without worrying about obscurring the image.

Another advantage is that it supports wireless LAN, or 802.11b, technology so if you are using a Centrino laptop, you do not need wires to connect the two.

Unfortunately, the WT600 is a bit on the bulky side, measuring 60cm and 5.6kg compared to the really petite models from InFocus.
