DARK ROCK WITH A TWIST

SOME FEMALE musicians have the mysterious ability to turn ordinary gothic type music into an extraordinary sound. Evanescence, a four-piece band from Little Rock, Arkansas, prove the point with their confident debut Fallen.

Their sound is dark rock with a twist. The blending of death metal with piano, strings and a strong, soaring female voice makes this band one of the most exciting acts of the year.

Twenty-year-old frontwoman Amy Lee and guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody formed the band in their teens. The band captivated mainstream audiences when their single Bring Me To Life appeared on the Daredevil soundtrack.

Fallen opens with Going Under, a song that, although reminiscent of the early days of Garbage, combines hard guitar riffs with Lee's powerful singing. The twists come with My Last Breath and Haunted, with digital beats alongside guitar-strumming. The band continue to surprise us with the piano-driven and symphonic Hello and My Immortal. The album ends with Whisper, a melodic metal tune with a scary zombie-sounding chorus.

This is an excellent debut from a young band.
