South China Morning Post photographers have raced to capture Hong Kong's defining moments in the years since the newspaper hit the streets. In this, the publication's centenary year, our researchers are trawling the archives to illustrate a forthcoming book celebrating 100 years of history as seen through the camera lens. Clear skies and soaring temperatures lured thousands of sunbathers to Deep Water Bay on July 5, 1970; and when they went down to the beach that day they were in for a big surprise.

Turning tricks on the ocean under the auspices of the Hong Kong Motor Boat and Ski Club were these four aquatic athletes, who were on a visit from the Pacific island of Guam. Together with other members of their troupe they treated their audience to a mesmerising display of skiing, barefoot skiing, rope jumping and somersaults, all at speeds of up to 65 kilometres an hour.
