ICAC arrests reporter for bribery

The Independent Commission Against Corruption last night confirmed it had arrested a reporter from Sudden Weekly magazine and a former security guard for alleged bribery in relation to an unauthorised visit to a movie shoot.

The movie is believed to be Wong Kar-wai's long-awaited epic 2046.

The ICAC produced four search warrants at Next Media headquarters in Tseung Kwan O.

Officers escorted the reporter to the media group's building and searched his desk. They left the office with a box of items and took the reporter to the ICAC's main office in Central for questioning.

Another two warrants were produced as officers searched the reporter's home yesterday.

The reporter, who was arrested on Monday night, was still in detention last night. The security guard has been released on bail.

In a statement yesterday, the ICAC said the investigation arose from a corruption complaint. The pair was arrested at the end of an operation that began last week.

It is understood the reporter allegedly offered bribes to the night-shift guard for allowing him to enter the premises and take pictures of the location.

The movie, which examines Hong Kong's relationship with the mainland, has been in production for more than 10 years.

It is expected to be released in October.
