A delivery worker was left hanging upside down after getting his foot stuck in a cargo lift door which then dragged him upwards in a freak accident in a Kwai Chung industrial building yesterday.

A security guard at the Tai Lin Pai Road factory heard shouts for help and when he went to investigate saw a man dangling upside down outside the fourth-floor cargo lift with his left foot trapped between the lift's doors.

He reported the incident to police, and firemen who arrived shortly afterwards released the man's foot by forcing open the lift doors.

Suffering from serious leg injuries, the man, surnamed Luk, aged 55, was admitted for treatment at Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan. His condition was described as serious last night.

The freak incident occurred shortly before 3pm when the man, who was making a delivery, went up the building in the cargo lift.

He exited the lift on the wrong floor and, trying to get back into the lift, he stuck out his left foot in the hope of preventing it from closing. It failed, and the doors clamped shut on his foot, before the lift ascended, taking Mr Luk with it.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
