Contest to drum up interest in music

Joyce Law

The word 'atypical' has been annoying Hong Kong for the past few months. But an 'atypical' music contest may brighten up your summer this year.

Summer Music Contest, to be presented by the Housing Authority over the next two months, is regarded as 'atypical' because a wide variety of performances, including classical Chinese instruments, jazz music, Hawaiian music, African drum and percussion, will be featured during the event.

It aims to enhance parent-child relationships and nurture young people's music talents through appreciation and participation. The teams have to be family based, with at least one member under the age of 16.

At least one musical instrument is required in a performance, where the participants can use their own 'free style' to express their creativity.

All participants are required to attend a screening session. The deadline for applications is July 10. For more details, visit www.housingauthority.gov.hk/b5/ commercial/promotionactivity.
