After two months of precautionary closures amid the Sars outbreak, Beijing's internet cafes, discos, bars and pool halls yesterday were allowed to begin applying for permits to reopen for business.

The health bureau will check each venue for adequate disinfection, ventilation and anti-crowding measures before approving licences, a cultural bureau official said.

Managers must ventilate venues with fresh air every hour, keep temperatures above 26 degrees Celsius, disinfect people's shoes and check customer temperatures.
