CHECK IN

Cheap chic: A big bank balance is no longer the prerequisite for visiting a boutique hotel. New Hotel 1929 in Singapore offers a hip alternative to the usual five-star suspects, but at fabulously reasonable prices. The former brothel comprises 32 individually designed rooms, including two suites with outdoor baths. Classic designer and retro vintage furniture fill the contemporary spaces, which include a rooftop jacuzzi and the trendy Ember restaurant. Rooms range from HK$347 for a single to $800 for a suite, including breakfast. Packages are also available, such as the Easy on the Pocket deal at $524, which includes two nights' accommodation, daily breakfast, a bottle of red wine and 33 per cent off treatments at the Eucalyptus Day Spa (50 Keong Saik Road, Singapore 089154. Tel: [65] 6347 1929; www.hotel1929.com).

Friendly fire: Kuala Lumpur is the world's least friendly city, according to a survey by New Scientist magazine. Social psychologists spent six years assessing local reactions in 23 cities to 'helpfulness' situations, such as dropping pens or feigning injury. Friendliest was Rio de Janeiro, better known for its crime and violence, followed by San Jose and Madrid, while New York and Singapore scraped in just ahead of KL as least friendly.

Beating a retreat: The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong offers a Local Residents Retreat priced at $1,788 for two. It includes welcome fresh fruit cocktails; a night's stay in a deluxe harbour view room; a $488 F&B voucher to spend at The Cafe, Toscana, The Chater Lounge or in your room; breakfast for two in The Cafe; and late check-out until 4pm.
