Dilemmas of power

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa has successfully established himself as a reliable 'through train' and a solid bridge between the ruler (China) and its subjects (the people of Hong Kong).

Nobody will be willing to step into Mr Tung's shoes and risk losing sleep over their duties in trying to please two masters of opposite destinies.

Mr Tung is obliged to follow the central government and at the same time he is asked to respect the wishes and aspirations of the Hong Kong people.

Ultimately he has championed the dreams of the Hong Kong people - with the consent of the central government. What more could you ask?

It is therefore not in the interest of Hong Kong for Mr Tung to step down unless we have a willing and able candidate in the pipeline to succeed him.

At this stage, we need to select the most suitable people for the legislature in order to voice the feelings of 'people power' and guide Hong Kong towards a more democratic future without the need for us to come out and demonstrate.
