New Carrera fronts up for Frankfurt

Porsche

PORSCHE will take the wraps off the long-awaited new 911 Carrera at the International Automobile Exhibition in Frankfurt next month.

Photos show the new 911 using the centre section of the existing car with fresh nose and tail treatments. The front end bears a distinct family resemblance to the 968 and features a sophisticated new headlamp design which gives an excellent range and spread of light.

Wider than the present model, the chassis has been re-designed and employs a multi-link rear axle for improved handling and safety. The new ABS 5 anti-lock brake system will also be introduced on the new model, and Porsche claims greatly improved brakingperformance.

Like most manufacturers, Porsche is putting increased emphasis on safety with its new models and the new 911 will have airbags for both driver and passenger as standard equipment and high-strength steel reinforcement in critical body areas.

The 3.6-litre boxer engine has been given a mechanical and electronic overhaul to increase power output to 272 horsepower. Either a six-speed manual gearbox or the Porsche Tiptronic automatic transmission will be available, the latter allowing lightning-fast gear changes with a minimum of effort.

A new two-plus-two coupe will be introduced to the German market in October and will be followed by a cabriolet version next year.

Hong Kong's Porsche Centre expects the first units to arrive in the territory by the end of the year.
