The Dandy Warhols

Welcome To The Monkey House (Capitol)

What's the alternative for alt-rockers who find their style has been left behind by the mainstream? The 1980s music you turned your back on in the first place.

The Dandy Warhols have always been snappy at promoting the kind of decadence they might have discovered as kids through a New Romantic film clip. Only natural, then, to let your sexy, exhibitionist female keyboardist play with synthesisers in front of Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon and bandmate Nick Rhodes, the album's producer. It's a sweet gimmick that will pay off in kudos when the 80s revival lands.

But perhaps there's a reason we've only flirted with bringing back the 80s. Welcome To The Monkey House struggles to take off. Having downed the rock tools, the Warhols find it hard to plug into electronica. It's doubtful that's deliberate - they like attention too much to go for the cold, distant routine.

They get credit, though, for pushing the Warhol side of their dandiness. Singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor is probably more interested in being remembered for the artiness of Bowie than the louche ways of Le Bon. Monkey House includes samples from Bowie's Fashion and was polished by two of the Thin White Duke's cohorts, Tony Visconti and Nile Rodgers. With the 70s and 80s covered, they turn to their 90s soul-mate Evan Dando for help in song- writing. Seems to be the way forward.
