Yes, petty crime can be a problem in Guangzhou. Then again, being swindled out of thousands of dollars by a camera shop on Nathan Road is criminal and being 'chopped' by thugs in Kowloon can also be a problem.

I have not had a problem with petty theft in over four years living in this city, but then I do not tempt thieves with baubles hanging from my neck.
