Evil queen plots stepdaughter's death

John Millen

PRINCESS SNOWDROP was a very pretty child. The king, her father, adored her. But when Snowdrop was seven years old, her mother suddenly died. The king remarried and his new wife hated Snowdrop. The new queen detested her stepdaughter simply because she was so beautiful.

The queen had a magic mirror, and each morning she asked the mirror the name of the most beautiful person in the world. The mirror always replied that there was no one more beautiful than the queen herself.

But one morning the queen was stunned with rage when the mirror said that Princess Snowdrop was the most beautiful person in the land. The queen knew immediately what she had to do. She had to kill her rival.

The evil queen ordered one of her servants to take Princess Snowdrop into the forest and dispose of her. The servant led the little girl into the dark woods. He decided to abandon the little princess, knowing that she could not survive long on her own.

Poor Snowdrop was terrified. She wandered through the shadowy woods and suddenly she found herself standing in front of a small cottage. This was the home of seven dwarfs who worked in the silver mines in the mountains. The dwarfs took pity on the little girl and decided to adopt her into their family.

Years passed and Snowdrop grew more and more beautiful. One day the queen decided to check whether she was still the most beautiful person in the kingdom. The mirror said that Princess Snowdrop was alive and that she was still more beautiful than the queen.

This time, the queen decided to kill Snowdrop herself and she disguised herself as an old woman. She took an apple and injected a deadly poison into the flesh. The mirror had told the queen where Snowdrop was living. This time there would be no mistake.

The queen's plan worked. She found the cottage in the woods and gave the poisoned apple to Snowdrop. That night, the dwarfs found her dead on the kitchen floor.

They buried Snowdrop in a glass coffin on top of the mountain. One day a prince rode by and saw Snowdrop. When he touched the coffin, a piece of poisoned apple fell from her mouth and the princess woke from her deathly sleep.

When the queen heard what had happened, she choked with rage and dropped dead. And Snowdrop and her prince lived happily ever after.
