New faces at foreign ministry
Zhang Yesiu and Zhou Wenzhong were yesterday appointed as vice-ministers of foreign affairs.
Xinhua reported that the State Council had removed Yang Wenchang, 59, and Wang Guangya, 53, from their positions as vice-ministers of foreign affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website said Mr Zhou would be put in charge of American affairs.
He was formerly Chinese consul-general in Los Angeles and also worked at the Chinese embassy in Washington. Mr Zhou became Chinese ambassador to Australia in 1998.
Mr Zhang, meanwhile, will be responsible for the ministry's protocol and personnel matters.
The Xinhua report did not announce the new position of Mr Wang, who has served as China's main spokesman on international arms control and disarmament issues.
