REAL HOPE FOR FANS

It was a good thing Real Madrid arrived on Wednesday -the same day about 90,000 Form Five students learned their HKCEE results weren't good enough for them to go on to Form Six and, therefore, university.

Many desperate students who would have queued outside schools for the slim chance of securing a Form Six place ended up camping at the airport arrivals hall and outside Wan Chai's Grand Hyatt for a glimpse of their soccer heroes.

Sure, local fans have had to put up with delays, cancellations, and a general 'screw you' attitude from the world's most-expensive team. The soccer stars cancelled an evening practice session, saying they were too tired, but found enough energy to party with Hong Kong's top models, which didn't exactly make them stellar examples for our youngsters to follow. But at least their visit, which costs Hong Kong $36 million, has been distracting enough for many desperate young souls to put aside their worries - at least for a time.

'I got my exam results and immediately rushed to their hotel. Of course I am upset about my [academic] scores, but I am very happy to see them,' one fan was quoted as saying in Apple Daily. He scored just four points in his HKCEE, which basically meant failing every subject he took.
