New official promises to uphold two-system policy

Klaudia Lee

A pledge to uphold the principle of 'one country, two systems' was given by the new Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong yesterday.

In a statement issued after his first meeting with Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, Yang Wenchang said it was an honour but also a huge responsibility to be given the post. He has replaced Ji Peiding, who has been appointed to work for the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

Mr Ji secured 2,871 out of 2,934 possible votes during the congress' annual session in March to win a seat on the 159-member standing committee.

'Under the 'one country, two systems' framework, the central government is always very concerned with Hong Kong's prosperity and stability,' Mr Yang said.

'They are also very concerned with foreign affairs relating to Hong Kong, and require the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its subsidiary office in Hong Kong to steadfastly adhere to the principle of 'one country, two systems'.'

Referring to the six years since the handover, Mr Yang said the office had carried out its function to protect the sovereignty of the country and to support the Hong Kong government in its continued co-operation with the international community. Mr Yang also pledged to improve communication and co-operation with the Hong Kong government.
