Sherry on a mission
BACKSTROKE CHAMPION and multiple Hong Kong record holder Sherry Tsai Hiu-wai is the only female on the five-strong university swimming team. 'I don't mind being the only girl - I quite like it actually!' said Tsai, who recently competed at the World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Tsai is on her summer break from university studies in California, where she has been training with world-class swimmers at a top club.
The former Diocesan Girls' School student will compete in six events in Daegu, including the 50 metres, 100m and 200m backstroke - her specialist events.
She will also enter the 50m and 100m freestyle, and 200m individual medley.
'It's my first time at the University Games, but I know that the standard will be very high. I saw the results from the last Games, and it is truly a world-class competition, so I hope I can gain some experience, try my best, and be competitive.'
'My target is to break Hong Kong records in the 100m and 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley.
'I'm hoping I can make the semi-finals in some events, too.
'I've heard from other students that it is a fun competition and that you can meet students from all over the world, so I hope we will enjoy the atmosphere.'
Sherry may not steal all the headlines this time. Another name on the swimming team is Alex Fong Lik-sun, who is famous for his television appearances and singing talent.
Fong, a former national team swimmer who is a business student at the University of Hong Kong, set the SAR 100m backstroke record (59.71 seconds) three years ago.
