Henry Tang heads delegation to Fujian

Henry Tang is to lead a government delegation to Fujian on Sunday to foster economic co-operation between Hong Kong and the mainland province.

The new finance chief will take part in promotional events for the jointly organised Fujian-Hong Kong Week.

It will be Mr Tang's first official visit to the mainland since he became financial secretary two weeks ago. He will meet senior officials of the provincial government on Monday.

The promotional events for Fujian-Hong Kong Week, which runs from Friday to next Wednesday, include a large exhibition and a series of seminars on Hong Kong's investment environment. About 200 Hong Kong government officials, entrepreneurs and professionals are expected to take part.

Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology John Tsang Chun-wah and Secretary for Economic Services and Labour Stephen Ip Shu-kwan will attend.

Meanwhile, more than 100 Hong Kong delegates to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have been invited to attend a meeting in Shenzhen on Monday.

Liu Yandong, CPPCC vice-chairman and director of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party, is expected to deliver a speech during the meeting.

Some local delegates expect the speech to focus on the latest political and economic developments on the mainland but they did not rule out the possibility that Ms Liu would talk about the central government's stance on Hong Kong affairs.

And more than 100 professionals and representatives of business chambers and political organisations have been invited for talks in Beijing following the mass protest by 500,000 people in Hong Kong on July 1 against the government and the proposed national security legislation.
