Unity theme at opening ceremony
THE 'DREAM FOR Unity' theme of the 22nd Universiade will be expressed through dance routines and technology at tomorrow's opening ceremony here in South Korea.
An elaborate and culturally expressive ceremony will be held at a packed Daegu World Cup Stadium. More than 60,000 tickets - some costing as much as 150,000 won (HK$900) - have already been sold. A rehearsal last night featured all the 4,300 participants, and attracted around 20,000 spectators who were encouraged to interact in the colourful event with drums and placards.
The performers are mostly high school students who have sacrificed their summer holidays to practise for several months.
Around 1,000 soldiers and marines will also take part in the ceremony.
The final torchbearer to light the Universiade flame tomorrow night is being kept top secret.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong will be one of the first teams to compete at the Games when its men's basketball side play their first match against Canada at Andong Gymnasium this afternoon, a day prior to the official opening of the event.
