Thumbs up for planned Central revamp
District councillors and a town planning official yesterday gave their blessings to the Hongkong Land project designed to beautify Central.
Independent member of the Central and Western District Council Chan Choi-hi said: 'It is good to see some commitment coming from the private sector to improve Central. I am sure the Central business district will be a very nice place for everyone to enjoy after the whole project is completed.'
He said the district council would help co-ordinate the government works in Central and those of the property giant so 'the colours, materials and styles' would match.
Another non-affiliated council member, Stephen Chan Chit-kwai, also welcomed the Hongkong Land initiative. 'Of course, I would like to see more trees in Central so the CBD can become a more pleasant place,' he said.
Hong Kong island district planning officer Ling Kar-kan said it was encouraging to see the private sector participating in improving Central's design and hoped this would inspire other companies.
Hongkong Land, the biggest landlord in Central, on Monday announced an ambitious plan to beautify Central with trees, pedestrianised areas and outdoor restaurants. It wants the so-called Cityscape project to be partly funded by the government.
