First major title eludes Wang

Wang Chen's bid for a first major badminton title failed at the final hurdle when she lost the championship game of the Indonesian Open, 11-9, 8-11, 11-1, to Guangdong province's Xie Xingfang.

Wang, who until the end of July was Hong Kong's only world number one, had said she was not worthy of the accolade until she had won a major event and beaten China's Zhang Ning and Zhou Mi.

She has achieved one of those targets, defeating Zhou in the semi-finals, much to the delight of Hong Kong head coach Chan Chi-choi. 'Even though she lost the final it's still better than expected. She'd never beaten Zhou Mi in six attempts,' Chan said.

In the other singles final, home favourite Taufik Hidayat surprised the men's world champion Chen Hong of China 15-9, 15-9.
