Australian civil servants

AUSTRALIANS can now apply to become permanent residents of Hong Kong without risking the loss of their nationality.

The Australian Consulate issued a clarification yesterday which enables Australian civil servants to apply to switch to local terms.

One condition for transfer is for a government officer to demonstrate commitment to Hong Kong and intention to stay by naturalising as a British Dependent Territories Citizen and acquiring permanent resident status.

Legal advice from Canberra showed secondary citizenship of a territory - but not a country - was legal.
