A decomposed human torso was found washed up on a rocky beach at Cho Wan, Lantau Island, yesterday.

A construction worker, surnamed Wo, 41, discovered the headless and limbless corpse while walking near the beach at about 4.30pm.

The torso is believed to have been cut off above the groin, making it difficult to identify its sex.

The body is believed to have been washed ashore rather than placed on the beach. Police cordoned off the beach as officers searched for more human remains that might have washed up separately.

Officers also searched the rocky and remote beach for other clues that might help investigator identify the body.

'Because of the torso's badly decomposed state we don't even know the deceased's sex or age at the moment,' a veteran police officer said.

The torso last night was removed to the mortuary, where pathologists are expected to examine it today to determine when the death occurred and its likely causes.

A police source said all patrolling police launches had been instructed to keep an eye on other remote beaches in case other remains washed ashore.

The sex and approximate age will be needed before police can start searching through their missing person files in the investigation.
