80pc of women prize youthful looks

Most women in Hong Kong want to look young for their age, believing it will boost their self-confidence, create a good impression and help advance their careers, according to an opinion poll.

'We asked them a straight-forward question: 'Do you want your face to look young for your age?'' said Robert Chung Ting-yiu of the University of Hong Kong's Public Opinion Programme, which carried out the poll of 530 women from August 18 and 20. He said more than 80 per cent of respondents agreed that they did.

'Nearly 40 per cent of them said they worried about getting fat when they age, and about a quarter worried about having wrinkles on their faces,' said Dr Chung, whose study was sponsored by US-based healthcare company Allergan, which manufactures Botox.

Survey results also showed more than 60 per cent of respondents believed a youthful look would help their employment prospects.

Public Opinion Programme manager Karie Pang Ka-lai also revealed that nearly 70 per cent of respondents said they had wrinkles.

Tinny Ho, a dermatologist, explained the main wrinkles were a result of ageing, and appeared because of repetitive creasing of the skin. 'Facial movements ... leave their marks on the skin because our collagen and elastic tissues begin to wear away,' she said.
