Village head stable after assault in taxi

The chief of a Sheung Shui village was assaulted late on Tuesday by three men he picked up in his taxi.

The attack on Iu Wing-loi, 45, head of Kwu Tung Tsuen village, happened at 11.30pm.

He picked up the men, all in their 20s, in Kwu Tung, and they attacked him when he stopped the car in Ping Kong Road.

Mr Iu tried to flee but the men continued to beat him outside the taxi before escaping on foot.

He suffered injuries to his nose, forehead and arm and was in a stable condition in hospital.

Police are investigating whether the assault was related to village politics.

The attackers made no attempt to rob Mr Iu.

Their inquiries came as two more people were arrested by officers from the Independent Commission Against Corruption in an investigation into alleged corruption and illegal conduct in connection with this year's rural committee election for Shap Pat Heung in Yuen Long.

The arrests bring to 52 the number of village representatives arrested since Sunday night in operation White Fox. One businessman has also been arrested.

The ICAC said the operation arose from a corruption complaint. Among the issues being investigated are alleged attempts to bribe electors, the illegal provision of dining and entertainment, use of force or duress against electors and illegal conduct over election expenses.

The ICAC said 12 of those arrested were still being detained last night, while the remaining 41 were released on bail.

The watchdog last night appealed for information on the whereabouts of Kam Chi-shing, an election agent, to assist in its investigation.

Anyone who has information can contact the ICAC on its 24-hour hotline, 2526 6366.

The ICAC said that information received would be treated in the strictest confidence.
