Bigger role

Bigger role

I applaud your leader 'District councils deserve a bigger role' (September 15).

As the District Council member for Discovery Bay since 2000, I have had first-hand experience of the impotency of our position in influencing policies of the government.

Getting the slightest response from some government departments has required near-herculean efforts, not just by myself but a large number of concerned Discovery Bay residents.

In particular, I have found the Home Affairs Department to be nothing short of dismissive of our District Council's efforts to improve transparency in the running of Discovery Bay.

Having said that, I have noted a marked improvement in the attitude of many government departments towards this district council.

It is my sincere hope that this trend continues and that the district councils are given their proper due so they may fulfil their role as a bridge between the government and the people.

It should not be necessary for citizens to take to the streets to be heard.

AMY YUNG, Islands District Council Member,
