Facing adversity

Taiwanese reporter Tanya Liu Hai-juo, who survived a British train wreck in May last year, is back in hospital for treatment - this time for cosmetic surgery.

The 35-year-old Phoenix Television newscaster underwent fours hours of surgery on Thursday at Xuanwu Hospital, the same facility that rehabilitated her after the accident.

Doctors have inserted a metal plate in her skull and plan to give her more cosmetic surgery in three months. She will get treatment to her right eye, the corner of her mouth and her neck.

Immediately after the accident doctors declared Liu brain-dead, but her family refused to give up and flew her to Beijing for treatment. She woke from her coma in July last year and was still receiving treatment when she became the Beijing correspondent during the Sars outbreak. She was based in Hong Kong before her accident, co-hosting Fortune This Week, a financial show for Phoenix.
