Elite pickings

Hong Kong high society will have its loyalties tested this weekend. With the Supremes' Mary Wilson in town for the FCC Ball, the Italy 2003 Gala Dinner and the Tatler Ball, the city's elite will have to be picky about which they attend.

Yet one event that will not require a ball gown is the Royal Overseas League party. The Commonwealth organisation is having the bash at one of Hong Kong's most coveted venues - the Harilela Mansion, on Saturday night.

Hari Harilela is a patron of the league branch and the event is a fundraiser for blindness prevention.

Members of all the Commonwealth countries will be there.

The event promises to be one of the biggest gatherings since the league's Jubilee garden party with the Earl and Countess of Wessex last December.

One person who will not be there is Dr Harilela himself. He is flying out to the United States at the last minute to serve on the board of regents at Pepperdine University, in Malibu, California.

Bookings have closed, with the event many times over-subscribed.
