Lawyers gathered last Thursday for their annual Oscars - the Asian Legal Business awards - where Asia's finest bask in glory of this year's wheeling and dealing.

And what an interesting sponsor line-up they had this year. Our favourite was HydroHealth Colon Hydrotherapy sponsoring the best capital markets law firm award.

The legal profession is of course flush with colonic candidates.

Another day, another company result - in this case a $12.5 million loss for stock code 0703 against a $23.9 million profit for the previous year. The company's name? Surge Recreation Holdings. Not entirely appropriate, perhaps, for a company racing to the bottom.

Lai See was in Guangzhou last week to speak at a gathering of the US State Department's Greater China junior officer corps. The subject was the Guangzhou media, and featured a panel of overseas and local journalists.

One frequently cited difference between overseas and local journalists is the latter's habit of topping up their meagre salaries by accepting cash awards to cover corporate and even government events.

Now Lai See, who as always arrived a bit late to the seminar, had earlier discussed an honorarium with our US government hosts to cover basic travel costs. But we did not expect it to be handed over right at the end of the session in full view of the entire audience, looking for all the world like it was the foreign correspondent who was hypocritically being paid off rather than the local journalists.

The envelope was sheepishly tucked into our suit pocket. Only later did we discover it just contained an invitation to a post-seminar reception.
