He's no millionaire, just a dishonest joe
Networks in Asia are still banking on reality shows. Even after Survivor, Amazing Race and Temptation Island, it seems viewers here are still hungry for more. From tonight, Star World will be airing Joe Millionaire.
Produced by the makers of Temptation Island, Joe Millionaire is about an ultra-rich bachelor (pictured with the two finalists) supposedly worth US$50 million who is looking for the girl of his dreams to share his fortune with. The group of 20 women are whittled down to one lucky lady, who after 'winning' is told the truth - that Joe is not a millionaire at all, but just a humble construction worker.
Shown on Fox in the United States, the finale in February drew an audience of 40 million, making it the second most-watched piece of television entertainment in US history after the 2001 Superbowl. It even outdid Jerry Seinfeld's sayonara in May 1998.
Surely a show about money, lies and expensive gifts cannot fail in Hong Kong.
Joe Millionaire, every Thursday on Star World at 10pm.
