Subject of hearing: Landslide at Kwun Lung Lau, Western, in which five people died


Duration: 10 months


Cost: $1.08 million


Major findings: Errors in design drawings prepared in the 1960s; government geotechnical engineers and a consultancy firm held responsible.


Action taken: None


Year: 1996


Subject: Sacking of immigration director Laurence Leung Ming-yin


Duration: eight months


Cost: $1.23 million


Major findings: Officials - including governor Chris Patten, the chief secretary, financial secretary and secretaries for security and civil service - misled Legco by saying Mr Leung was leaving for personal reasons when he was in fact forced out


Result: Secretary for Civil Service Lam Woon-kwong apologised to legislators


Year: 1998


Subject: Chaotic opening of Chek Lap Kok airport


Duration: six months


Cost: $4.3 million


Major findings: Chief secretary, secretary for works, Airport Authority acting chief executive and New Airport Projects Co-ordination Office director held responsible


Action: None. Inquiry said sanctions were unnecessary, with criticism penalty enough


Year: 2001


Subject: Short pilings on public-housing sites


Duration: two years


Cost: $14 million


Major findings: The report pointed out wrongdoing by, but did not recommend disciplinary action against, former Housing Authority chairwoman Rosanna Wong Yick-ming and the former secretary and director of housing


Action: None. Before the hearings, Ms Wong, who faced a Legco confidence vote, resigned
