Liao appointed for two years

Retired businessman York Liao has been appointed chairman of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation on a two-year term from this month. Dr Liao is a member of the University Grants Committee and had served on various university councils. He succeeds John Leong, president-designate of Open University.

Baptist puts Ho in post

Baptist University has appointed Professor Simon S.M. Ho as the dean of its School of Business from January. Professor Ho is now an accountancy professor at Chinese University and also director of the Centre for Accounting Disclosure and Corporate Governance at the Asia Pacific Institute of Business.

Searches go by the book

The University of Hong Kong's libraries have launched the hand-held on-line searching device MyLibrary@Hand that enables up to 700,000 users to search more than two million books and 25,000 journals, and perform other research functions. The Palm Tungsten C handheld is built on HKU's existing campus-wide wireless-LAN network.

HKUST showcases research

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has showcased its research achievements and hi-tech products at an annual China Hi-Tech fair in Shenzhen this week. Also displayed were its MBA and Master of Technology Management programmes.

Macau MBA students find sponsor

The Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) recently agreed to sponsor students taking the MBA offered at the Inter-University Institute of Macau, a private university offering post-graduate programmes only, and in return the students work with the university professors on consulting projects nominated by CEM.

SHKP launches apprenticeships

A 10-month apprenticeship programme has been launched by Sun Hung Kai Properties, youth organisation Breakthrough and Saint Too College for 25 Form Five graduates who have failed to move on to Form Six. The programme combines studies, on-the-job-training and leadership training. The students will also be assigned SHKP mentors.

Green power sets up virtual classroom

Environmental group Green Power has set up a virtual classroom on its website offering information on the latest environment-related news, games and learning themes. The website also has pictures of the natural heritage of Hong Kong and a databank of the local fauna and flora. Visit www.greenpower.org.hk

Singapore puts students to test

Singapore Management University this week announced the launch of the 2003/04 Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition. The competition, worth S$550,000 (HK$2.44 million) and open to tertiary students around the world, enables budding entrepreneurs to test their business acumen against each other. Kingston and the IB

Kingston International School is undergoing authorisation to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. It is not yet authorised, contrary to what was stated in the SCMP Good Schools Guide. The school's address is 113 Waterloo Road, not 13.
