Hong Kong may boast the world's highest percentage of Rolls-Royces per capita today, but in the 1960s automobiles were such a novel idea the government had to introduce a public-information campaign in newspapers, radio and cinema to teach pedestrians about the dangers they presented: the man above is demonstrating the hazards of jaywalking to adults and children alike. New immigrants from Guangdong, where there were few vehicles, were dying at an alarming rate after wandering off the pavements and into the paths of cars and trucks. Fortunately, times have changed. In 2002, there were more than half a million vehicles on Hong Kong's roads but fewer than a hundred pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents.
