Leeds take on United in Cup action

Leeds United and Manchester United clash again tonight in the third round of the Carling Cup just 10 days after Roy Keane scored a late dramatic winning goal for the Reds in a Premiership encounter at Elland Road.

Leeds United won through to the third round last month after an astonishing tie versus Swindon Town saw four goals including a late equaliser by Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson, a red card, and a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.

Last season's top eight Premier League teams, including Manchester United, were given direct entry into the third round, which features eight matches tonight and eight tomorrow night. The Carling Cup is the competition known in recent seasons as the Worthington Cup, and before that the Milk Cup, Littlewoods Cup, Rumbelows Cup and Coca-Cola Cup.

But despite all the sponsors' names, it remains the Football League Cup, first contested in the 1960-61 season.

The winners of the Carling Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in February will qualify for the 2004-05 Uefa Cup.

Defending champions Liverpool have won the competition seven times.

Tonight's Carling League Cup matches: Arsenal v Rotherham, Blackpool v Crystal Palace, Bristol City v Southampton, Leeds v Manchester United, Queen's Park Rangers v Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers v Burnley, Bolton v Gillingham, Reading v Huddersfield.
