Tung, vice-premier meet international advisers

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa met his team of international advisers yesterday with visiting Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan. They discussed the mainland's latest economic developments and Hong Kong's growing integration with Guangdong. Visiting Vice-Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission Zhang Xiaoqiang also gave the advisers an update on the mainland's economic development policies and strategies.

Customs officers seize fake goods worth $1.6m

Customs officers have seized counterfeit goods worth $1.6 million from a container imported from Huangpu, Guangzhou. While inspecting a 12-metre container, officers found goods bearing various forged trademarks and false-origin markings. The goods included sportswear, handbags, wallets, television sets and air conditioners. Three men, aged between 30 and 50, are assisting the officers with their investigation.

Warning over possible delays to post sent to UK

There may be delays to ordinary and registered post sent to the UK even though the Royal Mail employees' strike had ended, the Assistant Postmaster General Chan Yau-fung said. Delays may still occur until the backlog was cleared, he said. Normal speedpost and parcel services to the UK have not been affected.

Maths professor at Poly U named among top in field

Hong Kong Polytechnic University mathematics professor Qi Liqun has been named one of the world's most influential mathematicians from 1981 to 1999 by authoritative citation database ISI High Cited.com. A total of 232 researchers are listed in mathematics, and the honour puts Professor Qi alongside other star mathematicians, such as Gene Golub, of Stanford University, and Peter Lax and Louis Nirenberg of the New York University.
