AmCham names women of influence
Two women at the centre of Hong Kong news were yesterday named women of influence by the American Chamber of Commerce.
Former Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) chairwoman Anna Wu Hung-yuk, and Society for the Protection of the Harbour chairwoman Christine Loh Kung-wai were cited for their trail-blazing work.
AmCham and the International Women's Forum Hong Kong jointly organised the first annual awards.
Ms Wu, in her acceptance speech as 'Professional of the Year', referred only indirectly to the EOC controversy, saying: 'What a week this has been.'
Her successor, retired Court of Appeal judge Michael Wong Kin-chow resigned on Thursday in the wake of a scandal sparked by the sacking of a senior EOC official.
Ms Loh heads a group behind moves to stop the Central-Wan Chai reclamation, but it was for her work as head of the Civic Exchange think-tank that she was named 'Entrepreneur of the Year'.
In her speech, she referred to the harbour as one reason why she loved Hong Kong.
Michelle Garnaut, managing director of M Restaurants, was co-winner of the top entrepreneur award. Furniture-maker Wendy Cho Yuen-yi, chairwoman of Ultra Group Holdings, was named 'Young Entrepreneur of the Year', while IBM China/Hong Kong won 'Best Company for Women'.
