Mobile-phone operator SmarTone has launched a new 'Pets World' service with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), whereby users can register to download pictures of abandoned pets in need of homes.

Lai See understands that the initiative coincides with SmarTone chief executive Douglas Li's recent adoption of a pet dog - named Ricky - from an SPCA shelter. We are heartened to see a boss practising what his company preaches.

A Small world

After seven long years at the South China Morning Post, international news editor James Unwin hung up his typewriter ribbon in September to walk the Earth, with possible destinations including Nepal, British Columbia and the Chilean coast, among others.

Weeks passed. The business desk was paralysed by phone calls from friends and family worrying about his whereabouts.

In recent days, however, James' splendid isolation was rudely shattered in a remote area of the Himalayas, when none other than his former boss - the Post's vacationing business editor - randomly crossed his path.
